Seems London is getting a more serious consideration. Close to announcing? focustaiwan.tw/news/aeco/201702150014.aspxPrevious announcements were that they would use the A350 on this route. Doubt they would use a B777 as its too much capacity for a new route (LHR was discontinued with the A340 in 2012). A section of the article below. Taipei, Feb. 15 (CNA) China Airlines (CAL) Chairman Ho Nuan-hsuan (何煖軒) said on Wednesday the carrier plans to launch new routes to London and Paris, adding that he is optimistic the airline will perform better in the market place this year. "We could launch a new route to London in the fourth quarter of the year, but it depends on which airport we are flying to," Ho said, explaining that the most desirable aviation hub, Heathrow Airport, is already overcrowded.

I'm actually really curious that China Airline offical FB page (I think it was 10/10) suggested that they will launch a new North America route this year. So far, they've been quite about it which is kind of weird .....

Well plans do change. Also what came as a surprise is adding SFO weekly at first then increasing to 12/14 times per week. This was never expected to be an A350 route. That will take up around 3 A350 planes eventually (between regional ops)to service this route.
Remember other routes with older planes take priority as well. A340 routes have now all been replaced just recently. B747 route to Vancouver will be replace with a weekly A350.
Then you have also the medium haul Hawaii using the A330 until mid year or slightly later which needs to be swapped out.
Plus on top you will have the Australian routes (8-10hr flights) that eventually needs replacing.
Hence why after seeing SFO rostered on I can't see them having enough frames to start new routes. Only exception is maybe LHR (Due to recent news) even i think its only a 50/50 of that happening this year still.
Now with the remaining 4 frames coming in 2018 I can finally see them having the frames to fill out their current routes and maybe 2 new routes...
Then if they want to do Milan and etc they definitely need to pick up the 6 options.

I thought they might end up rotating aircraft between FRA and SFO with 77W+359 depending on the load factor as TPE FRA doesn't seem to do that well. According the data, load factor was some where in mid-60% for FRA TPE which isn't great compare to the other markets.

The problem is then the B777 is really not useful for most of CI's routes. So they need more A350'S and then get rid of the B777.
I mean the options are? Keep A330 on up to 10hr flights (Not fully flat beds and so they need to discount big time to compete).
If FRA is only at 60% capacity one wonders when they were flying the B747 which had greater number of seating.
