This should open up some production slots, thus enabling new customers to get hold of a A350 before 2020

At first moment I thought: what a blow for airbus! But, we can see a bright side too. First, there are 70 quite early slots to sell. And if, and thats a big if, Emirates decides that 77W is after all too large as the smallest member of their fleet, than... A330Neo would fill just fine So, if one day EK orders A330Neo remember where it was mentioned for the first time. And all those newspapers could get rid of Aboulafia and hire me for half the price

It is not so tragic news for the industry - it really gives chance to other to get their hands on the plane earlier. It is less than 10% of the orders. If it would be those 50 A380 it would have been much worse. Still Airbus group shares went almost 4% down .

Why did EK cancle the orders?Do they think that the aircraft is too small?

We don't know why EK cancelled the order, since they haven't yet provided their reasons. It's strange that the world's largest widebody operator shuns both modern efficient widebodies, the 787 and the A350.
The cancellation obviously means that they don't see a role any more in their fleet for that aircraft family. As they certainly don't intend to cut their fleet size, I think they go for other aircraft : either they have now reached a binding agreement with Boeing on a huge 777X order (to be announced in Farnborough), and, unbelievably, that aircraft is intended to be the smallest in their future fleet, or they are a launch customer of the A330 NEO, or they intend to use some mix ot both.
The 777X is almost a given, but I don't know if an A330 NEO order is a realistic option for EK.

Just a remark: when EK starts a new route they operate it with A332, later with 772 and finally with 777 or.... This did happen with PRG, WAW, VCE - those I am sure about - probably much more. If the route does not work out - they close it before 777 comes on.
I do not mean the "main" routes like LHR, CDG, JFK etc. where they haul over 1000 people a day.
So the 330NEO has some sense in a limited amount.

Rolls Royce is now staring at a £2.6bn black hole, according to British press. But Airbus does not seem to be too pessimistic when I read articles concerning this matter. Of course, Emirates is a BIG customer for Airbus. I think they rather see EK happy with 50 additional A380's than unhappy with 70 A350's. I'm sure the cancellation has been discussed at the time the A380's were ordered.
Having said that, I remember some discussion on the engines for that latest order. Any chance they will change to RR, keeping them happy also? 70 350's "only" need a minimum of 140 engines and 50 times four on the A380....

Changing for RR is indeed contemplated in A380 NEO scenarios, in which Engine Alliance is expected to bow out.
No engine choice has been announced for the new EK order, even for the first batch of 25, which in any case is for the existing type. So, I think that if a NEO is launched, EK goes RR.

So here's my rather long opinion on why they cancelled, in it nutshell it simply states, the A350 is too small for EK. In 2007 the A359 order made sense, the airline had 9 772s, 29 A332s and 8 A343s to replace (a total of 46 aircraft) and only 38% of the fleet consisted of 773 sized aircraft. Fast forward 7 years and there are still 772s, A332s and A343s to replace (now, only 34 ac)but around 71% of the fleet is now a 773 or larger showing that EK can sustain and prefers large aircraft. EK is slowly retiring the A332 and A343 although they are not replacing it with anything of that size. Elsewhere in the fleet the A345s are no longer serving ULH routes, rather confined to medium haul routes with the longest flight (according to theeksource) being DXB-JNB which even an A330 can theoretically fly. This is leading me to believe that EK is only keeping these smaller aircraft (smaller than a 773) in order to continue growth rather than because they need a 'small aircraft'. (Admittedly they would probably still need around 20 or less of these aircraft for new/regional routes). In 5 years time, the airline's requirement for 'small' aircraft would probably be even smaller than it is today. Regarding the A351 which would be used as a 773/77W replacement, the aircraft is a bit small for a 773/W replacement (it's slightly shorter and cannot accept 10 abreast as comfortable as the 777) and therefore the 777X provides a better replacement with extra seats would I would think that EK could easily fill. With the 777X being superior for EK over the A351 and room for around only 20 or less A359s (see the '3rd' paragraph) EK would probably prefer to absorb the loss of operating a larger aircraft rather than have to operate a small subfleet of A350s. Another interesting thing to note is that their first delivery was scheduled for 2019, by then their youngest A330 would be 16 years old and their oldest 777, 23 years old. If EK wanted the A359 to replace these aircraft, they would not wait until 2019, rather start replacing the aircraft earlier (and given that they ordered the aircraft in 2007, they probably had the ability (earlier on) to request an earlier delivery date). Instead they were willing to wait until 2019, which I think might be because the plan was to switch the 50 A359s to A351s. Then came a more capable aircraft, the 77X and EK lost interest in the A350.
