Consider a scenario where cancellation fees did still apply for the A350 order... Once Boeing firmed up the configuration for the 77W successor, Emirates was no longer interested in the A350 order and stated that they were "reviewing their fleet strategy". Could it be that EK were pushing Boeing to account for the A350 cancellation fees in their 777X order pricing and after being reluctant to do so, they have finally bowed to the pressure? It could also explain why they were taking a long to finalise the deal and that Boeing were trying to push the 748i to them, possibly as an alternative to this. Just my two...no wait. Just my 5 cents. Canada no longer uses the penny.

So here's my rather long opinion on why they cancelled, in it nutshell it simply states, the A350 is too small for EK. I agree with jkkw, but I am reluctant to admit that EK may consider having the 777X (whether 778 or 779) as its smallest aircraft after 2020 ! Yet, after the A350 cancellation, I don't see any other likely prospect : - I don't believe in an other Airbus option, because EK could have converted their order instead of cancelling it and, anyhow, an A330 NEO would be even smaller than an A350, while the A350K (A350-1100) is a mere speculation. - The 787 is too small, and the largest sub-type, the 78J, lacks range. - the 77W is the present EK workhorse, but it is far less efficient, and no larger, than the A35J ! It cannot be more than an interim solution, even though it can certainly be ordered at a much cheaoer price from now on. So, beyond the 77W, EK seems satisfied to have no aircraft smaller than 400-seat (779), except some ULH frames (778).

DL, QF, VA, SQ? Who else might we have? I would think more like EI (who are leasing second hand to keep things going) or KU (with what must be one of the oldest fleets among flag carriers)

They still run routes with their 332/334/772 planes - routes which they want to run and which simply are not able to fill 773/W or 380. Now those routes fill completely their current fleet of 332-21pcs,343+345-13pcs+772-19pcs i.e. 53 pcs !!!! (OK realistically a bit less since always 2-4 pcs are in service but...) Those 53 pcs of planes with 200-350 seats would represent a fleet of almost any other BIG airline. And do not mix it up - those routes are not regional ! Some of them are as long as any typical 773/W route they run. They run some of the short regional routes with A380 if there is enough people/cargo to fill it.
So I do believe they can not just forget this part of their market it does not make sense. There will be something coming in to replace those.

I would think more like EI (who are leasing second hand to keep things going) or KU (with what must be one of the oldest fleets among flag carriers) EI has been a bit grouchy with regards to their present A359 order saying that it is overbuilt for their routes. I would have thought that they are a good candidate for the A330neo instead. KU is locked up in government red tape...so I wouldn't count on them to go forward so quickly.

Two more comments - I do not believe AB will charge EK the cancellation fee - there will be other deal on this. - I (BBC...) mentioned that AB shares went down 3% + it might be just today most other shares went down - Boeing similar 2.4 %

In Airbus' press release, it was said that Airbus and EK have come to an agreement,... Thing is, if EK isn't in need of the A350 anymore and if the A330neo would be too small, this would lead me think that this agreement is related to the latest order of 50 whalejets...

Has anyone considered that EK could be moving to a one aircraft fleet! Remember they have not ordered any 777X aircraft yet, just expressed an interest and have built a brand that could support A380's to every destination possibly...... Could there be another order announcement at Farnborough for the A380 on the way?
