They're waiting for at least 20 A350s to enter service on a variety of routes in order to evaluate its performance. To me, this is the most telling point. Block 3 (= the first A350s that should be at 'normal' weight) starts with MSN 21, so EK may be waiting for data on block 3 aircraft operation before making a decision. More broadly, the postponement shows that either this order is tied by EK to the A380neo launch, or that the contest is very close. So they are waiting to see the first 5 Block 3 frames ? Do we know the weight difference from block 2 to 3 ? I don't like the idea that an order for the A350 is dependant on another aircraft types launch !

The term is really a misnomer because OEMs are not the original manufacturers; they customize the original product. I prefer the terms maker, manufacturer or producer etc

You're quite right in that the term OEM is misused often (even by me). Strictly speaking, I believe it refers to the various suppliers of equipment subsystems found in the finished product. In the case of aircraft, examples are Honeywell, Panasonic, Thales etc. This is something even my sibling who works with aerospace industry clients corrected me on, oops. However, I also believe that for any subsystem/component Airbus makes in-house, they are they OEM for that.

I don't like the idea that an order for the A350 is dependant on another aircraft types launch ! Unfortunately, I think that in any industry that deals with such extreme extreme unit prices and low quantities as aviation, normal market mechanisms don't work. There is so much political pressure and corruption going on that this linking of A380neo launch and A350 order seems comparatively innocent...

I will soon find out then that the IAAF / FIFA have just bought 200 SSJs for Aeroflot / ? PS where are the football World Cup and olympics going soon

This isn't real clear to me, are they waiting to have 20 A350s in service to make a decision, that way then block 3 wouldn't even be reached?... Or are they looking at 20 frames of Block 3 to be in service, meaning roughly 40 frames in service total?.....
